HAMMERSMITH & FULHAM FESTIVAL
April
Festival
Hammersmith and Fulham Festival 2 - 17 April 2005, venues throughout Hammersmith
& Fulham.
A spanking new festival kicks off in April. The Hammersmith & Fulham Festival
promises a fortnight of cultural, entertainment and leisure events across the
borough.
Hammersmith
& Fulham Festival , one of London’s newest cultural and entertainment
events, runs from 2 until 17 April.
With a wide range of cultural, entertainment, sports and fun events to suit
all tastes and ages, the festival promises something for everyone. With numerous
competitions and special offers, it also means that it could be a deeply cost-effective
option.
With everything from workshops on writing pop music for young people to an
Irish Ceilidh night; from exciting top-level football to a gentle cruise down
the Thames, the festival offers a broad range of choice, all highlighting the
rich heritage of the borough. There’s even an opportunity to wipe out
your library fines!
For full details of the festival, please check the festival’s
official website
But, in the meanwhile, here are just a few of Westlondongrid’s suggested
events that promise to be both enjoyable and a good opportunity to learn something.
Music for all tastes is strongly represented. For example, why not try...
A concert by the Fulham
Symphony Orchestra on the 2nd of April. Conductor, Marc Dooley will put
the orchestra through its paces with a programme of Prokofiev's “Violin
Concerto No. 1” and Shostakovich's “Symphony No. 11 'The Year 1905'”.
With solo violinist, Alina Ibragimova.
Music, illusion and dance all come together to a distinctive end in “Aurelia’s
Oratorio” at the Lyric
Hammersmith . If this is your cup of tea, be sure to check the festival’s
special offers and competitions section. You may be in for a treat.
Seven to nine year olds who fancy themselves as the pop songwriters of the future
may find that the workshop on writing pop and rock songs at Bush Hall on the
5 April is exactly the early start they need to future fame and fortune in the
pop music world. The workshop is run by The
Music House for Children
Sport is another area that offers some exciting opportunities.
HFCyclists the Hammersmith
& Fulham branch of the London
Cycling Campaign will be holding a special cycle ride starting at Furnivall
Gardens on Sunday 3 April.
While for all you armchair sports enthusiasts, the talk on the 1908 White City
Olympics on Wednesday 13 April at Hammersmith Town Hall promises to be especially
enlightening. For all of those who may remember, Westlondongrid provided some
interesting online resources about this in this
article on the history of the Olympics that we produced last year.
Theatre may also offer a few surprises. “Mammals” starting at the
Bush Theatre by Amelia
Bullmore may challenge the preconceptions held by anyone who thinks that theatre
is the realm of the pretentious and inaccessible. A bittersweet dark comedy,
this is the first stage play by the writer of episodes of This Life, Black Cab
(which she devised) and Attachments (all for BBC2). Chances are that if you
enjoyed her work on the box, you might like it on stage. Especially because
you may even be able to see it for free!
Check of the Hammersmith & Fulham Festival site’s “Special Offers”
section to find out how you could get your hands on one of 70 free tickets.
