Needs Your Vote!
Are you one of the members of the public who wonders how expert juries can
award “rubbish” prestigious art prizes? Well now the Centre of Attention’s
annual prize exhibition at the Pearlfishers Gallery in west London allows you,
the public, to decide.
The Centre of
Attention, is an experimental contemporary art gallery in the trendy artistic
Bohemia of east London, will be showing this year’s Centre
of Attention Art Prize exhibition at the Pearlfisher’s Gallery in
west London.
The exhibition will run from 29 November 2004 to 11 January 2005, Mondays to
Fridays, 8am to 7pm at the Pearlfisher Gallery, 50 Brook Green, London W6 7BJ
(tube station: Hammersmith) Click
here for a map.
The exhibition is of the work of nominated, younger contemporary artists, all
of whom have some connection to London. What makes this prize interesting is
that rather than being awarded on the opinion of a panel of experts, the prize
– of one euro- will go to the artist who wins the highest number of votes
from members of the public. So, can you complain about the result if you don’t
exercise your right to vote on art?
The exhibition will be taking place at the Pearlfisher Gallery, a new asset
for the visual arts located in west London at Brook Green. This new addition
to the visual cultural scene in west London plans to develop a range of new
and exciting projects over the coming months.
December also sees other opportunities to take in exhibitions of all sorts
in west London.
Waterman’s Art
Centre are showing a suitably wintery new media installation by Igloo involving
computer generated snow that reacts to viewers that should prove fun for all
the family which runs through December until the New Year. December also give
a last opportunity for you to take in something for those who prefer their art
to look more like paintings, an exhibition of portraits by painter J Chuhan
of leading British South Asians.
For those who are interested in art with a documentary slant, the “Times
Past – the 50’s & 60’S” exhibition at Riverside
Studios runs until 19 December 2004. The exhibition shows the unique documentary
photographs of Nicholas Hardinge, documenting the life of London.
Harrow Art Centre will
be showing a special exhibition of children’s art produced by children
and young people especially to coincide with the festive season. The show called
“Art-Rageous”
will run from 1 December until 31 December.
Meanwhile, the Harrow Museum will be exhibiting an equally community-focussed
show. “Harrow
in Europe” is an exhibition of photographs that grew out of Harrow
being twinned with the city of Douai
in France . The exhibition has grown out of the competition that involved asking
local people to take pictures of their family and friends at home and aboard
to see who would produce the most interesting photos. The exhibition runs until
19 December 2004.
December sees a broad range of exhibitions of art and visual culture; something
to suit all tastes whether cutting-edge contemporary or more traditional craft-based
work and community arts projects. If any of these forms of the arts appeal to
you, then also remember that west London has a broad range of learning opportunities
that might interest you.
