BEDFORD PARK FESTIVAL
Bedford
Park Festival
11 - 26 June 2005
June sees the arrival of the Bedford
Park Festival with a fortnight of fun, fancy dress, art and architecture.
Originally set up in 1967, and always in aid of a good cause ( this year is
no exception with The Brain
Tumour Research Campaign being one of the worthy beneficiaries ) The Bedford
Park festival offers a fortnight of activities ranging form the frivolous to
the highbrow.
Whilst all the usual summer fun of fetes and fairground are on hand, one of
the notable features of Bedford Park Festival is that it offers an opportunity,
within close reach of most of west London, to learn more about the art and architectural
history of the area. One can even take in some of the local art treasures usually
residing quietly and hidden behind closed doors.
For example, a fair deal of the programming relates to John Bedford, the architect
who built a number of the houses in Bedford Park and contributed to the growth
of Chiswick. For the serious follower, this section of British
History Online gives full details. But for the more user-friendly version,
why not attend the guided walk during the festival on Sat 26th June. Check the
programme for full details.
The visual arts get a particularly strong representation during the festival
with the annual Artists
At Home event taking place from 17 to 19 June. This event involves numerous
artists in Chiswick, Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush who work at home, opening
their homes to the public. If you want to take a look at what they've been making,
be sure to check the site for details.
The festival also includes and exhibition of works by mainly local artists
in St Michael's Church.
