LONDON SUSTAINABILITY WEEKS

sustainabilitySustaining London

London Sustainability Weeks, taking place from 5 to 19 June, aim to be the biggest ever celebration of making London a greener, cleaner and healthier place to live.

This year’s London Sustainability Weeks will take place from the 5th until the 19th of June. This years events, aimed at making London a cleaner, greener, healthier place to live, promises to be the biggest of the annual events yet.

With over 400 events listed on the official website there will certainly be something going on in your part of west London. The official website enables you to search events to find one that suits you.

With an emphasis on a range of sustainability themes such as greener transport –like cycling- or the cultivated environment –like gardens and local produce- no surprise to find that events in west London include things like a Father’s Day Bike Ride in Syon Park on the 16th of June or West London Green Festival at Parsons Green on the same day; conservation projects at Bush Farm in Brent and “Bracken Bashing” on Stanmore Common.

Be sure to use the search engine at www.londonsustainabilityweeks.org to find the event you want. And, if the project appeals, why not volunteer to help? You can find details of how to volunteer on the site.

But What is it?
Sustainability is one of the words that we have seen increasingly used. We probably all realise that it has something to do with “green” and environmental issues, but is that what it’s all about? And where can we go if we want to learn more?

In effect, sustainability has to do with a more comprehensive approach to managing living environments. Yes, taking into account “green” and environmental factors, but also considering how these relate to other social and economic factors.

This section of the Sustainable Measures website is a good place to start to learn more.

And this site, the London Sustainability Exchange offers a great number of resources on sustainability and puts interested organisations in touch with each other. This page explains in simple terms what sustainable development is and this page gives an idea of what it might mean for London.
